The 5 steps, with a tip for you

  1. Stay close to an adultParent tip: Hold a hand or stay nearby.
  2. Get on the transportParent tip: No rush.
  3. Sit down or hold onParent tip: Explain where it is safe to stand.
  4. Speak quietlyParent tip: This is a small politeness quest.
  5. Get off at your stopParent tip: The adult leads first.

Make it a quest instead of a reminder

Instead of repeating the instruction, start with a tiny story. In Mess Monsters this routine opens like this: “Backpack Seeker is riding public transport for the first time, or just feels worried. Shall we travel calmly?”

You stay the game master. Your child does the real step, you confirm it on your phone, and Backpack Seeker gets a little happier with every step. The phone stays with the adult; the routine happens in the real world.
